Registration
1. I have scouts of different ages can I register both
my Scouts at the same time and get it over with?
A: NO, this year our track software, staff and procedures are not equipped to handle this. This can be a consideration in years to come.
What are the Rule Changes from Last Year?
1. Registration occurs on race day, no pre-registration is required. However, the scout must have FINISHED registration 15 minutes prior to the start racing for his rank.
2. NO lubricants (graphite) are allowed in the gym. (Of course lubricants (graphite) are still allowed on the cars and encouraged, just don't bring the tubes in the gym)
3. Cars that make the finals may not adjust their cars or add graphite.
4. All scouts in the rank that is currently racing must remain in the stands in the area marked for racers.
5. In the event of illness or a family emergency an adult proxy may run the car on behalf of the scout. Scouts are NOT allowed to be proxies.
Building/Racing
1. Is there a higher level race for the winners of the Pack race?
A. Not this year. In years past the Pack 730 Winners
would race Pack 34 Winners for an all Springboro championship. Dan Beard Council level will not have a
race either.
2. There are a lot of "speed" kits out there at the local hobby shops and craft stores,
some even have replacement wheels and axles, are these kits legal?
A: No, the Scout MUST race with the parts out of an official cub scout pinewood car kit, which is only sold through the Scout store. This includes using the axles, wheels and wood block provided from an official kit. In the case of lost parts or a sawing mishap, a limited amount additional kits are available from the pack or if the pack is tapped out, the Scout store. If you would like, you can buy several of the official kits, just to be safe, but the pack only supplies you with one kit. You and you scout are definitely allowed to shape the wooden block, polish the axles, and get the burs off of the wheels, within the limits provided by the Official Pack 730 rules as posted on this site.
3. Are there any Pack 730 Specific rules for the Pinewood Derby? If so, where may I find them? If not, which rules do I go by?
A: We mostly follow the rules that were included in your pinewood derby cars kit. There are a few places where
the pack rules supercede the rules in the kit. See the official pack 730
rules and all other pinewood derby information at http://www.pack730.com/currentyear/Events/PackEvents/PinewoodDerby
4. What types of lubricant are allowed? Most web sites say only
dry lubricants like graphite are allowed. I bought some a Teflon based
lubricant made by company called pine car, is that lubricant OK?
A: Any kind of dry lubricant that won't muck up the track for the next car is allowed.
5. Last year participants were adding a subtracting weight to ensure their car was at the maximum weight during
registration. Will that be allowed this year?
A: Yes, addition and removal of the weight during registration is allowed. Remember, the end time for registration is fixed, no exceptions. After the car is registered, no further modifications of any sort will be allowed.
6. What are acceptable ways to add weight?
A: Any kind of weight may beadded as long as the weight is fixed to the car such that it cannot become
detached or move during the trip down the track. In scientific terms, the
center of gravity of the car must be fixed. Check the rules for clarification.
7. What is the general shape of the track that was purchased. Is there a web site were I can see it?
A: The track was purchased from BestTrack and they have a web site with pictures. http://www.besttrack.com/ Also, note that we tie 6 of these tracks together, so that six cars will race at a time. The timing will be acquired electronically through the use of MicroWizard's electronic gate system (www.Microwizard.com) , which will feed the actual race times for each car to the Grand Prix Race Manager software http://grandprix-software-central.com.
8. I want my car to look COOL, what kind of stuff can I add to it? Can I add stuff like windshields, little racer guys, or pipes like I see in the hobby shops?
A: Yes, you may add these things as long as they are firmly attached and do don't cause your car to break any of the weight, width, height, or clearance rules.
