Rocket Rally - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)
  • Q: Where and when will the "Rocket Rally" be held?

A: At Patricia Allyn Park on July 16th from 10:00 AM until 1:00 PM.

  • Q: Where is Patricia Allyn Park located?

A: Patricia Allyn Park is in Clearcreek Township on State Route 48. The park is on the east side of State Route 48, three-tenths of a mile south of the intersection of State Routes 73 and 48.

  • Q: Is the Rocket Rally only open to boys currently in the Pack?

A: No, this event is open to all our Scouts *and* their families. Older and younger siblings, cousins, parents, step-parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts, uncles - all are welcome!

  • Q: We had to use a BSA-approved kit to build our Pinewood Derby car. Is there an "official" BSA model rocket kit we must use to participate in the Rocket Rally?

A: No. You can build and fly any sort of model rocket you want at the Rocket Rally. The only limitations are imposed by your time, your budget, and your building skills.

  • Q: Where can I buy my model rocket kit?

A: Model rockets of various sizes and complexities can be purchased at chain stores (K-Mart, Wal-Mart), at hobby stores (Hobby Lobby, The Hobby Shop, HobbyTownUSA) and from many online sources (just do a search for "model rocket"). Additionally, the Pack has a limited number of model rocket kits to sell. If you're interested in buying a rocket from the Pack, contact Jon Ratliff at Jonathan.Ratliff@Kodak.com.

  • Q: What sort of model rocket is the Pack selling?

A: We have two different models, the "Astra" and the "Viper", both from Quest Aerospace.

  • Q: How much do the the Pack rocket kits cost, and what do they include?

A: The price is the same for the "Astra" or "Viper": $10 gets you one (1) model rocket kit you must assemble and one (1) 18mm solid-fuel motor of the correct type for your rocket.

  • Q: What's the difference between the "Astra" and the "Viper" rockets?

A: Both models can fly up to 1,000 feet high and use a parachute for recovery. The "Astra" is 13" tall and has three bare balsa wood fins which are individually glued to the cardboard rocket body; its nosecone is white plastic. Painting is recommended after the model is assembled. The "Viper" is 17" tall and uses a plastic tailfin assembly with four fins. The tailfin assembly and nosecone are blue plastic, the rocket body is gloss white, and decals are included to decorate the rocket body. Painting the rocket is optional. For photos and additional details see the Quest Aerospace website at "Astra Model Rocket" and "Viper Model Rocket"

  • Q: Which model should I get, the "Astra" or the "Viper"?

A: Both models are rated "Skill Level 1" - for Beginners. The one-piece plastic fin assembly of the "Viper" reduces assembly time. It's not difficult to individually glue the wooden fins onto the "Astra", but it takes additional effort, as does painting the finished model. Still, many boys will get a feeling of accomplishment from doing this. I often recommend the "Astra" for WEBELOS, but there are always exceptions.

  • Q: Can I buy additional motors at the Rocket Rally?

A: Yes, we will bring extra type A6, B6 and C6 18mm solid-fuel rocket motors for the "Astra 1" and "Viper" rockets. The price is $2 each. All motors will be sold "first come, first serve". If you are not planning to launch an "Astra" or "Viper" rocket YOU MUST CONFIRM THE CORRECT MOTOR FOR *YOUR* ROCKET as different rocket models use different types & sizes of motors.

  • Q: What if we buy a rocket kit from the Pack, but then we can't make it to the Rocket Rally?

A: After the Rocket Rally, I'll be happy to loan you the equipment you'll need to launch your rocket on your own.
